Control of Waterways Header
Date May 28, 2026
Time 12:00 PM – 4:15 PM
Location IMAGEM Office

How do you maintain control of the waterways amid increasing pressure and reduced capacity?

Pressure on the water system is increasing. At the same time, a great deal of knowledge is being lost as experienced staff leave, and the work is becoming increasingly complex. How can a water authority maintain control over waterways, policy, and implementation?

During this afternoon, together with waterboards, we’ll demonstrate how digital transformation helps organizations work smarter, more proactively, and more efficiently.

From insights on individual waterways to managing entire water systems, with smart automation, proven expertise, and practical applications.

Case studies

Ursula Hanff, De Dommel Water Authority

Speaker: Ursula Hanff, Data Coordinator, Surveying/Data Collection Coordinator, and Geoinformation Advisor at the Waterboard De Dommel

Do you know what's going on in your waterways?

Sluive closures, overgrowth, invasive species, discharges, illegal activities; it happens more often than you realize. And with thousands of kilometers of waterways, it’s simply no longer feasible to monitor everything yourself. In this use case, you’ll see how things can be done differently. How you can gain insight without relying on physical inspection rounds or the knowledge of individual employees. Processes that identify issues, document what’s needed, and automatically initiate follow-up actions. Less walking. More knowledge. More control over what’s really happening in your waterboard district.

Jeroen Waanders, WDODelta Water Authority

Speaker: Jeroen Waanders, Innovator at the CIO Office of the Drents Overijsselse Delta Waterboard

Can you see what happens when one single waterway changes?

Waterways never exist in isolation. What you do in one place affects the entire system. But are you able to identify that effect in time? In this use case, we take the first steps toward a waterway system that takes the initiative on its own: a system in which every virtual or physical element of a waterway, from weirs (physical) and sedimentation (virtual) to vegetation growth, possesses a form of operational awareness. A system that doesn’t wait for a human to notice something, but identifies issues, assesses them, and calls for action on its own when necessary. With that as our starting point, we’re taking the first steps to see what works and what doesn’t, and what’s involved.

In this session, we will not only explore the thinking and methods behind creating awareness within a waterway system, but we will also present the first concrete results.

By the end of this afternoon, you’ll know:

  • which digital applications are already working in the field today.
  • what considerations and methodologies played a role in the development of the first version of the “self-regulating” watercourse.
  • how system insights help inform policy decisions.

Who is this for?

For professionals at water authorities who work on waterways and digitalization. From information managers and data & innovation advisors to everyone who translates policy decisions into action.

Participation is free of charge.

Feel free to bring a colleague

Do you know a colleague who might also be interested? Please feel free to share the event with them or bring them along. It’s precisely these different perspectives that make the afternoon especially valuable.

This is a great opportunity to catch up with other water authorities and share experiences. And of course, IMAGEM will provide a good cup of coffee and a delicious lunch. All you need to invest is an afternoon, and in return, you’ll gain new insights and valuable contacts.
