The increasing intensity of rainstorms poses major challenges for municipalities. Almere, with its many waterways and green spaces, also recognized the need to modernize its water management and make it more climate-resilient. The goal was clear: to shift from a reactive to a proactive approach, with the aim of minimizing disruption and damage to residents and infrastructure.

IMAGEM Nelen & Schuurmans have joined forces to help the Municipality of Almere better understand the impact of flooding and respond to it proactively. By linking hydrodynamic modeling software with advanced digital twin, Almere can not only predict flooding but also visualize it. This provides valuable insights for policymakers, emergency services, and residents to limit damage and ensure safety.

Increasing flooding due to climate change

Climate change is having an increasingly significant impact on our daily lives. Heavy rainfall and downpours are leading to more flooding, which can result in serious property damage, disruption to infrastructure, and even risks to public health. Municipalities such as Almere face the challenge of better preparing for these events and warning and protecting residents in a timely manner.

Digital twin hydrodynamic models

A digital twin a powerful tool for visualizing complex environmental data. By integrating Nelen & Schuurmans’ dynamic hydrodynamic models digital twin , policymakers and water experts can better identify where flooding will occur and how water spreads throughout the city.

This allows them to literally see where water pools after a downpour, which access roads are blocked, where the water crosses the curb, and even how high the water rises against building facades. IMAGEM complexity by combining automated 3D city models with interactive simulations, so that everyone—from policymakers to residents—gets a clear picture of the potential impact of flooding.

Take proactive measures and reduce costs

Thanks to this innovative partnership, the City of Almere can better understand the impact of extreme weather conditions using accurate forecasts and 3D visualizations, enabling it to take timely action. This not only helps prevent damage and reduce costs, but also enhances the safety and well-being of the community. Furthermore, the 3D visualizations make it possible to share complex information in an accessible way, leading to better-informed and more engaged citizens and more efficient decision-making.
